Bhimgarh Fort, Reasi, Jammu & Kashmir
Bhimgarh Fort (also Reasi Fort) is a historic fort located in the town of Reasi in Udhampur, Jammu & Kashmir. Situated atop a hill, the fort overlooked the Anji River and offered a strategic view of the region with its 500 feet elevation over its surroundings.
Bhimgarh was originally an ancient brick and mud fortification and was later reinforced with stone during the reign of Maharaja Rishipal Rana - the founder of Reasi. It was then repaired and reconstructed by Maharaja Gulab Singh Jamwal of the Dogra Rajput Dynasty from 1817 to 1841 as the Royal Family's residence and this is when it assumed its current form.
The fort during the Gulab Singh Jamwal era was reconstructed on the lines of the forts of Rajputana. The entrance of the fort constitutes of Baluka Stone and the gate in both style and structure adopts heavily from the forts constructed by their southern cousins. The entrance also has enormous statues of Lord Hanuman and Goddess Mahakali.
In addition to the gate the new introductions to the fort included 50 m high walls on all sides to defend it from external attacks. Within the fort premises exists an ancient temple, a treasury, a dumping room as well as a small reservoir, while inside the main fort building, there are numerous rooms of various sizes. The fort has endured countless earthquakes in past, yet it has remained unaffected for years, standing as a testimony to its might and workmanship.
