Surajkund Lake, Faridabad, Haryana
An amphitheateresque masonry reservoir built in the 10th century AD (some historians date it back to 7th century), Surajkund or the 'Well of the Sun'/'Sunwell' near Faridabad is a monument of immense archaeological importance. A remnant of the Tomar Rajput Dynasty's rule in Delhi, the reservoir was built by the legendary ruler of Delhi, Surajpal Tomar.
The reservoir is a much later part of an elaborate water system, parts of which including have been dated back to the Bronze Age, the larger historic site however also has artefacts from the stone age as well. The reservoir is fed by the Anangpur Dam that lies about 3km South-West of the structure.
The Surajkund reservoir is semicircular in shape, shaped like a rising sun and is about 450 feet in diameter at is bed. The walls of the reservoir as of now (a large part of it is still undug/underground) have a height of about 60 feet is a remarkable example of ancient indian civic architecture. A stepped pyramid like pavilion formed the ceremonial entrance to the well and held a superstructure. A large Sun Temple also once existed on the site which was also the centerpoint of the lake, however it is nowhere to be seen as of today.
