Bada Bagh Chhatris, Jaisalmer, Rajasthan
Bada Bagh, which literally means 'Big Garden', is located on the Ramgarh road. Bada Bagh was commissioned by Maharawal Jai Singh II of the Bhati Rajput Dynasty of Jaisalmer between 1513 AD and 1528 AD. His son Lunkaran, after his death built a beautiful garden next to the lake and a 'Chhatri' (Cenotaph) for his father on a hill next to the lake. The last Chhatri, meant for Maharaja Jawahar Singh, dates from the 20th century and remains unfinished after Indian independence.
The Bada Bagh complex consists of a tank, a dam, a garden and Chhatris of the Bhati dynasty. These memorials represent a combination of various Rajput styles of architecture.
One cenotaph has been erected in the name of each Bhati ruler, however this tradition was discontinued in 1947.
