Rani-ki-Vav, Patan, Gujarat
Rani-ki-Vav is a famous step well situated about 2 km to the northwest of Patan. It is one of the most magnificent step wells in Gujarat built during the 11th century. It is believed that the step well was built in the memory of the Bhimdev I (AD 1022 to 1063) of the dynasty of Solanki (Chalukya) Rajputs by his widowed queen Udayamati.
The step well faces east and measures approximately 64m in length, 20m in width and 27m in depth. It was one of the largest and the grandest structures of its time. It has a stepped central corridor compartmented at regular intervals with four multi storeyed pavilions. These four pavilions which demarcate the stages of the descending central corridor, have multiple storeys - two, four, six and seven. The seven storied pavilion being the deepest.
The walls and pillars in the Vav are intricately carved. These carvings depict deities with most of them dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. The Dashavataras can be seen on the walls of the Vav as well.
